Newspaper, Harper's Weekly, New York.16pp., complete issue, disbound, June 6, 1866, VG. From an interior page, four vignette engravings of the work of the North Carolina Freedman Bureau at the Trent River Settlement. Includes images of the Trent River Settlement, School House and Chapel, Negro Huts, and General Steedman addressing the community. The settlement is described in 1/2 column article. In 1866 President Andrew Johnson sent Generals John Steedman and Joseph Fullerton on a tour of the South to gather information in an effort to discredit the Freedmen's Bureau. Southern blacks, however, expressed strong support for the continued presence of the Freemen's Bureau, believing that it offered them necessary aid and, especially, protection. In one case, when General Steedman offered a crowd of 800 blacks a hypothetical choice between the Freedmen's Bureau and the federal army, the audience overwhelmingly chose the Bureau. ... plus, Newspaper, Harper's Weekly, New York.16pp., complete issue, disbound, December 15, 1866, occasional staining, tight trim, else VG. From an interior page, a 1/2 page engraving " 'Zion' School for Colored Children, Charleston South Carolina." An important engraving shows one of the many schools organized and run by African Americans. Francis Cardozo, an educational leader who returned South after the Civil War, was the director of the American Missionary Association's Zion school in Charleston, South Carolina, with more than 1,000 pupils. "It is a peculiarity of this school," ran the accompanying caption, "that it is entirely under the superintendence of colored teachers."
