Muster roll of Captain Hagen's Company (B) of the Ninth Regiment of Cavalry, Army of the United States, 2pp. double folio, April 30, 1874, Ringgold Barracks, Texas, signed by Captain Oscar Hagen and Major J.F. Wade, who report that the company was on the march and "has been scouting" Indians and are in good "Military Appearance." Signed by Medal of Honor recipient Corporal John Denny and Private Brent Woods, both with their mark. Very good condition. John Denny (1846-1901) was a Buffalo Soldier in the United States Army and a recipient of America's highest military decoration-the Medal of Honor-for his actions in the Indian Wars of the western United States. Denny joined the Army from Elmira, New York, and by September 18, 1879 was serving as a Sergeant in Company C of the 9th Cavalry Regiment. On that day, his unit participated in an engagement at Las Animas Canyon, New Mexico, and Denny "[r]emoved a wounded comrade, under a heavy fire, to a place of safety." For his actions, Sergeant Denny was awarded the Medal of Honor two years later, on November 27, 1891. Sergeant Brent Woods was one of 20 troopers of Company B, 9th Cavalry, who encountered Nana, an elderly but battle-wise Apache, and about 50 others from the Mescolero Agency in New Mexico Territory on August 19, 1881. Four troopers and their lieutenant were killed in the exchange of gunfire, which escalated when several civilians came on the scene and joined the cavalrymen, now under Woods' command. As the clash continued, Woods, "distinguished himself not alone as a brave and gallant fighter, but also by the heroic manner in which he went to succor of his wounded comrades and injured citizens." The Army bestowed the Medal of Honor on Woods, and years later he was honorably discharged to return to his home in Pulaski County, Ky. When he died in 1906, Woods was placed in an unmarked grave. Later, historians interested in Medal of Honor recipients located Woods' remains and had them reentered with a proper headstone to recognize his heroism.
