DOUGLASS, Frederick (1818-1895) Abolitionist, writer, and orator. Born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey on Maryland's Eastern Shore in 1818, he was the son of a slave woman and, probably, her white master. Upon his escape from slavery at age 20, he adopted the name of the hero of Sir Walter Scott's The Lady of the Lake. Douglass immortalized his years as a slave in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845). Partly-printed Document Signed, "Fred'k Douglass" as recorder of deeds, September 24, 1885, and also in his hand, Recorded in Luber No 1140, folio 264 st seq one of the Land records for the District of Columbia and exd.by Fred'k Douglass, Recorder."
