Mound Bayou is a city in Bolivar County, Mississippi, United States, notable for having been founded as an independent black community in 1887 by former slaves led by Isaiah Montgomery. Montgomery was seen as promoting an accommodationist position, a position which would soon be shared by another former slave and eventual black leader Booker T. Washington.
