LONGSTREET, Helen Dortch (1863-1962) known as the "Fighting Lady," was the second wife of Confederate General James Longstreet. She earned her nickname from being a champion of causes such as preservation of the environment and civil rights. She is also remembered for her work as a Confederate memorialist and postmistress. She ran an unsuccessful write-in campaign for governor of the State of Georgia against Herman Talmadge in 1950.Typed Letter Signed "Helen Dorth Longstreet" 1pp., September 20, 1951, Augusta Georgia. She writes to a friend, Carl W. Breihan [author of Western biographies]. But, the printed back page is great. Longstreet expresses her disappointment in losing her gubernatorial race to Talmadge. He was governor from 1948 to 1955, was marked by his segregationist policies.
