War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Thomas J. Owens, 6th Georgia Infantry, WIA at Bentonville, North Carolina, 4pp. octavo, Yorktown, Virginia, April 10, 1862, and reads in part: "...The enemy moved in sight last Saturday morning at ten oclock and opened a brisk and spirited cannonade on redoubt number five, which responded with a corresponding promptness and vigor. The firing continued at intervals of half hour and bombarding the entire day....The enemy have at last found but that the occupation of the this peninsula is the key to our capital and to its accomplishment has most strenuous determined efforts will be directed, but before he does it he will have to meet fight and overcome the boys that gave him such a signal and humiliating rout the twenty first day of July last. In my judgment this battle will be another Sebastopol, the most sanguinary and long contested one of the war...Our Comdg Gen. has I learn hopeful confidence in his ability with the brave and gallant southern boys under his command to whip the fight. Should we be defeated our defeat cannot be attributed to a want of that stubborn heroism so characteristic of Southern soldiery on the battle field but to a preponderating ford of our adversary. Defeat did I say had such a word is not to be found in the Southern vocabulary. We may be overpowered but whipped never. The cause we are struggling to maintain, precludes the idea of such a thought as defeat..." Fine condition.
