War-date Confederate soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Samuel M. Wells, 19th Tennessee Infantry, 4pp. folio, Iuka, Mississippi, March 22, 1862, and reads in part: "...The number of soldiers here are about seventy five thousand, the Yanks are represented to be about the same number. There was a little fight in at Eastport about nine miles from our encampment. The Yankees came up there in five gunboats and fired on our battery. Our men expected them and placed some cannon down below the battery in the bushes and when they came up and commenced firing on our battery our men commenced firing below having them broadsided. After firing a few shots the gun boats had to retreat. We are expecting a fight here in a few days which will no doubt beat the fight that was fought at Manassas..." VG.
