War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed, "W.D. Cole" 38th Alabama Infantry, 2pp. folio, June 9, 1862, Camp Holt, Mobile, Alabama, and reads in part: "...I wrote to your Pa a few days since in regard to procuring me a substitute....I want him to procure one for me if he can. Let it cost what it will for I want to come home. I am perfectly satisfied with my regimental and company officers, not one but what I think to be perfect gentlemen, and I think that they appreciate me as an orderly sergeant...I could be promoted to the rank of General and remain from you all or return now as a private...There is 2 or 3 women here with their husbands, but I had rather not see you and the children than to have you at such a place, with all kind of vulgarism, wickedness, profanity, and immortality that ever was practiced is here. I thought I was wicked, but I find myself to be quiet moral...It is thought at present that Mobile will not be attacked by the Yankees before Fall. There has been considerable preparation for their reception in the way of fortifying and placing obstructions in the way of their boats. It is believed that England and France will interfere in this great struggle, but I put no faith in it at all..." Very good condition.
