War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Captain Leonard Williams , 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 2pp. quarto, Cavalry Camp 9 miles from Richmond, June 26, 1862, and reads in part: "...we are now near the James River or near it 9 miles below the city. Yesterday I took out the squadron to picket on the river near the boat landings & along the roads that lead towards the enemys left wing. Their extreme left. Genl. Casey's Division is about 2 or 3 miles from our picket post & their pickets & ours about 1 mile a part. Now & then each party sends out scouts, this morning a small scout came in sight of our videttes. I am now in command of the squadron. The maj & senior captains being absent. A great battle is looked for every day...Genl. Jackson is in Hanover County & will probably force Genl. McClellan to change his front. I think he will be attacked very soon by Genl Lee & Jackson...I do trust we may whip him most severely. I regret to see our newspapers taking such pains to make the public dissatisfied with our generals continually finding fault with their slowness & urging an immediate attack....June 27 a fight took place yesterday between Genl. Jackson & some of McClellans forces. It was a very heavy fight. We could hear the cannonading about 50 rounds to the minute..." Very good condition.
