War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Captain Leonard Williams , 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, 4pp. folio, May 10, 1862, and reads in part: "...a considerable fight took place at Williamsburg between our rear forces & the enemy's advance, our army drove them back much routed on Wednesday. The enemy's gunboats landed a considerable force...5 of our regiments were sent to meet them, they were badly whipped & driven in under cover of their gunboats. Since then (now Sunday) our rear has been comparatively unmolested except on Friday Genl. Stewart's Cavalry were attacked & lost several men. I recd your last...while in Battle line & was made happy to know you had heard of my election & was pleased with it...I sympathize with the people of Charleston in this hour of their apprehension & still hope the city will prove impregnable...."
