EWING, Andrew (1813-1864) US Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent Tennessee's 8th District in the Thirty-first Congress, he served from 1849 to 1851. Ewing was an 1832 graduate of the University of Nashville, where he became a lifelong trustee the following year. He was admitted to the bar in 1835 and commenced law practice in his hometown. In 1850 he chose not to seek reelection to Congress, and apart from serving as a delegate to the 1860 Democratic National Convention, pursued no political office. During the Civil War Ewing was a Confederate judge of General Braxton Bragg's military court. He died in Atlanta one day short of his 51st birthday. War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed by Andrew Ewing, 1pp. quarto, Atlanta, Georgia, October 20, 1863, addressed to Lieutenant General Polk, and reads in part: "...Two of the Staff Officers of Genl [Daniel H.] Hill are here today and the General will be here tonight or in the morning early and will go immediately to Richmond. They represent Genl Hill in their last interview with him as still dissatisfied with you and state that it arises from some language used to him by the President as a quotation form one of your letters to the President. I can only suppose that the President must have referred to some expression in the paper read to him by you whilst at Atlanta. I respectfully suggest to you the propriety of an interview with Genl. Hill and furnishing him with a copy of the paper referred to and a statement of the circumstances. It is stated here this morning that Genl. Cheatham has resigned, that Genl. Mackall has been relieved at his own request, that the President offered Genl. Pemberton the command of your corps or that of Genl Hill and that upon conversation with [Gen]eral Officers of the two Corps Genl. P. felt it his duty to decline either..." About very good condition.
