War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by William C. Dunham, 2pp. quarto, Richmond, Virginia, February 16, 1863, addressed to General John H. Winder, and reads "...Desiring to visit Europe for the purpose of perfecting some business arrangements between that country and the South I applied to Hon. J.P. Benjamin through the letter of introduction of Hon. M.D. Graham member of Congress for passports for myself, mother, wife and sister. He said he would of course give them if I were citizen but being a Marylander it was not in his power but referred me to you for simple passes to leave the Confederacy. I desire to take them via Culpeper and from there to Canada from where I can easily get out. I herewith ask for the papers referred to and accompany this with the letter from Mr. Graham..."
