War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by John Devereux, 1pp. quarto, Raleigh, North Carolina, September 22, 1863, addressed to General Polk, and reads in part: “...My oldest son who is just on the verge of eighteen will soon leave the Instituate at Lexington where he now is to enter the army. I am naturally anxious that he should enter with some prospects of advancement if it should be found that he deserves it and to secure this should be glad to get him on the staff os ome officer either as a regular or as a volunteer aid. May I so far presume on our connection as to ask if you can take him in either capacity on your staff or if not on your own may I take the liberty of soliciting your influence iwth someone of the Generals of our Western army...” Some mouse chew else good condition.
