Confederate soldier's letter written and signed by "W(ilkins) Stovall" as a Prisoner of War, 1pp., Johnson Island, November 17, 1863. Stovall enlisted on 4/30/1861 at Granville County, NC as a Private, on 5/6/1862 he was commissioned into "K" Co. NC 55th Infantry; was wounded 7/1/1863 Gettysburg, PA; captured 7/14/1863 Falling Waters, MD; confined 7/16/1863 Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC; transferred 8/8/1863 Johnson's Island, OH; gave his oath of Allegiance 6/11/1865 Johnson's Island, OH. Stovall writes his brother John Stovall, In part, "...I am well but must admit I am discouraged fearing it will be some time before I am exchanged ... Wash Currin has my pistol which you may have till I return. Capt Upchurch died last week, inform Lieut. Hadley when you write the Regt. ..." Comes with original cover, G.Brother John Stovall served with Wilkens in the 55th, was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, 7/3/1863, exchanged 9/23/1863 City Point, VA, not returning to duty until 2/15/1864. He was wounded again 5/11/1864 Spotsylvania Court House, VA., dying from his wounds 5/14/1864.Captain Albert E. Upchurch was captured at Gettysburg, 7/3/1863, confined at Johnson's Island and died there 11/9/1863.
