War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by George Washington Wright, Clanton's Legion, 1st Alabama Cavalry, 2pp. quarto, Camp near Meridian, June 30, 1864, and reads in part: "...I sent Oscar to report to you as directed. But never heard of him afterwards - I suppose he got there safely. When I sent him off he turned my clothes over to Billy (Capt. Willis' boy) and among them was a pair of boots which he either forgot to deliver or lost...We are expecting to be stationed at Selma for the winter, the officers are making great efforts for that end, and are very sanguine of success, as the horses are sadly in need of rest, and the men but poorly equipped and clothed. I think the war has only this year to be concluded. If it lasts longer, I am afraid that the conscribing of substitute principals will greatly diminish our resources. At any rate our position is much better now for fighting, and that of the enemy much worse than it has ever been before..." Fine condition. George Washington Wright was one of several brothers from Pensacola, Florida, who served in the Confederacy during the Civil War.
