War-date Confederate soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Mc. D.A. Nolen, Capt. A.C.S, 2 pages, quarto, Glade Springs, July 1, 1864, to Thomas Metcalf, Esq, Abington, Virginia, in part: "...I have come all the way from Greensboro, NC for a few outstanding Receipts & letters which were ordered to be sent to care of Capt Shelby & I learn...that they are at Abington in your desk. Genl Morgan has very politely ordered me to return to N.C. & act as Wagon Guard or messenger with wagons, transporting stores. I think if Genl Morgan was aware of the fact that I have walked from Greensboro, N.C. to Wythesville, Va to get up my outstanding receipts to make up my reports & had have known that Capt. W.B. Smith ACS was at Greensboro, N.C., awaiting orders with all his reports made up he would not have been so hasty in ordering me to wagon Guard duty, I have no clk & Capt. Smith has a good exempted clk with him at Greensboro, N.C. I will leave here by first train...meet the wagon train about half way back from Greensboro to Wytheville...If you have any letters in your desk for me...forward them to me as early as possible to this place care Major J.H. Shook, C.S...." Very good condition.
