War-date Confederate civilians Autograph Letter Signed William N. Pepper, 2pp. quarto, Little River, Georgia, November 25, 1864, and reads in part: "...I believe I wrote to you in May last of the Yankee raid in this county and the burning of the bridges over New river...the Engles Bridge...was unnecessarily burned by Order of Gen. McCausland. The RR bridge was burned by the enemy. I saw them when they applied the torch & come very nearly being killed by a shell. The running of the road was not interrupted by it scarcely at all as they reshipped the freight at the river. Though they built a temporary bridge in less than two weeks after the old one was destroyed & now they have a bridge as substantial as the old one with the exception that this one can not be burned....I fear James will have to go into the army...I have no news of a local character except that the deserters have been playing rather a big game in this country but Gen. Duke with Morgans old command came in some time since & rather put a check to them. They killed [some] of them...& captured others...." Fair condition.
