Rare late war Confederate Autograph Letter Signed by a citizen of Richmond, Virginia, February 26, 1865, 2pp. octavo, and reads in part: "...The city is rife with rumors in regard to the evacuation of Petersburg, of which you are more cognizant than myself being in closer proximity; and with a full knowledge of the movement of the army. The government has been sending away arms, ordnance & ordnance stores, machines and other things from here for some time, but I do not believe that it tends toward voluntary evacuation, but providing for such a contingency in the case of a failure of the Spring campaign. General Lee has complete control of all the military power of the Confederate States and I am willing to abide by anything he does. If the people and the army will only give him their united and firm support. I believe he will bring us out of this difficulty with complete triumph to our arms...There is no news stirring except as I have said before in regard to the evacuation of this city and Petersburg. Hard times and worse coming you hear on every side. Unionism is rampant in this city and if the Yanks were to get here they would be received by many with open hands and outstretched arms. God grant that that might not be the case..." About very good condition.
