VANCE, Zebulon Baird (1830-1894) was a Confederate military officer in the American Civil War, the 37th and 43rd Governor of North Carolina, and U.S. Senator. A prodigious writer, Vance became one of the most influential Southern leaders of the Civil War and postbellum periods. Autograph Letter Signed "Z.B. Vance" 1pp. quarto, on his law office stationary, Charlotte, North Carolina, October 25, 1869, addressed to Colonel Tate [6th North Carolina], and reads in part: "...Under the impression that I was indebted to you for 5 shares of stock in our road to enable me to become a Director, I returned them to you by letter some three weeks since. After doing so I was informed by Mr. Lincolnton that the stock was transferred to me by Maj. Wilson..." Very good condition.
