COWLES, Andrew (1833-1881) He was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1860-64 and a State Senator from 1865-66 and 1870-74. During the Civil War Cowles commanded the 18th Brigade of the 75th Regiment of North Carolina Militia at Hamptonville. He was given orders to purchase "rifles & double barrel shotguns" for the "detail militia" and to round up any deserters in his area. As a businessman, Cowles ran a successful whiskey distillery. Half-plate tintype of North Carolina Senators, with Cowles seated third from the right. With brass matte. Rare image. Good condition....plus; Autograph Letter Signed by Andrew Cowles, 5pp. quarto, Senate Chamber, N.C. February 5, 1873, with "State of North Carolina SENATE CHAMBER" cover addressed to his wife, with good family content, it reads in part: "...As to Jacobs I have tried to fight him. There is certainly no prospect of any permanent improvement in him. The only way to manage him is to let him go his own way and not give him any liquor. I am sorry for him but have long since learned that it will not do to nurse him out of his spirit..." More. 9.2.2011 UPDATE: Plus, Framed Oval Painting, formal portrait of Cowles, painted on board, 8” x 10,” chest up, with identification on the reverse, “Andrew Cowles, Hamptonville, N. Carolina, Taken at Raleigh N.C., 1870, age 37 yrs. 11 mo’s., height 6ft 1 inch, weight 190lbs.” All very good condition. (3 items).
