Autograph Letter Signed by Confederate veteran James F.J. Caldwell" 2pp. quarto, on his lettersheet, Newberry Court House, South Carolina, December 13, 1880, addressed to James Simmons, and reads in part: "...The action of the Legislature in passing as the newspapers say it has in both houses, the bill to ratify the Statue Law of the state has revived the only ambition for office I have ever felt. I wish very much to get a place on the commission to be appointed for that purpose..." and that's asks for assistance with recommendations to Judges Ripley, Hudson and Fraser. Fine condition.
