1861 Complete Bound Volume of Harpers Weekly (52 issues), rebound tightly in modern bindings, includes the index to illustrations. . Certainly a cornerstone to both the War and the newspaper collector, this volume provides both wood-cut engravings and textual reporting of the events that led to the American Civil War and the early months of that war. Several January issues illustrate Ft. Sumter and Major Anderson as the tension builds. The seceding Mississippi delegation including Jefferson Davis is front page of the February 2nd issue (illustration by Winslow Homer), the seceding Alabama delegation is front page February 9th issue. Davis and Stephens are profiled in the February 23rd issue as the Confederate Government is formed. Lincoln illustrations and reports dominate the March issues including the inauguration issue of March 16th, Winslow Homer 1/2 page of Lincoln entering the Senate Chamber. The April 27th and May 4th (Winslow Homer front page illustration) issues are nearly exclusively devoted to the Bombing of Ft. Sumter and beginning of the War. The late May and early June issues are replete with regimental illustrations as the federal government begins to mass its might. June 1 issue has a full page illustration of Jefferson Davis and his cabinet. Considerable focus on Zouaves and Ellsworth. The killing of Ellsworth is thoroughly covered in the June 15th issue. The balance of June and July issues report / illustrate early battles, southern scenes (including slave auction), and Federal officer profiles. August issues report / illustrate the first major battle of the War with two issues nearly exclusively covering the First Manassas battle. The remainder of the September, October, November and December issues covering battles, heroic events, military and political personalities. This volume is complete (52 issues), 832 pages, (+/-) 900 illustrations and has an index to events and illustrations. A complete history of the first year of the War.
