DEVENS, Charles (1820-1891) Union brigadier general. He was made brigadier-general of volunteers, April 15, 1862, commanded a brigade during the Peninsular campaigns and fought at Fair Oaks, Antietam and Fredericksburg, being severely wounded at Fair Oaks and having a horse shot under him at Antietam. For gallant conduct at Fredericksburg he received commendations from the division commander. In 1863 he commanded a division in the 11th corps at Chancellorsville, and was severely wounded there. Returning to the field in 1864, he was appointed to the command of a division of the 18th army corps, reorganized as the 3d division of the 24th corps, and his troops were the first to occupy Richmond upon the evacuation of the city by the Confederates. On recommendation of Gen. Grant, he was brevetted major-general of volunteers for gallant and good conduct at the capture of Richmond. War-date Union general's Autograph Letter Signed by Charles Devens, 2pp. octavo, undated but late 1861 early 1862, addressed to Lieutenant Hans Peter Jorgensen, 15th Mass and later KIA at Gettysburg, it reads "Sir, The General will get an order today for you to recruit from Washington. Send on any men you may get by Willard or Daniels. I shall send on from here a couple of noncommissioned officers in a day or two. Go on with the recruiting as if you had an order. It will certainly come..." Fine condition.
