War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed by Haldiman Sumner Putnam (1835-1863) Colonel 7th New Hampshire, shot in the head and killed on the parapet of Fort Wagner, 1pp. quarto, Providence, Rhode Island, April 28, 1861, addressed to Governor Ichabod Goodwin, and reads in part: "...Anticipating a leave of absence from my own corps which will allow me to serve with troops during the war. I have the honor to apply for a commission in the regiment of New Hampshire Militia, recently called for by the President. In making this application it may be proper to inform you that I am a native of New Hampshire, that I graduated at the U.S. Military Academy in 1857, and I am desirous of sharing the fortunes of the troops of my own state in the coming contest..." Fine condition.
