War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed by Daniel P. Walling, 2pp. quarto, Benton Barracks, St. Louis, November 13, 1861, and reads in part: "...I must take the opportunity of writing once in a while to let you in the office know how I get on. Well, then, as to what I am. D.P. Walling 1st Lieutenant, Dodges Battery, Light Artillery, attached to the 4th Regt. Iowa Volunteers, U.S.A commissioned from the state of Iowa, dated Nov. 1st, 1861, for 3 years or during the war. This place I got without help from any Duth Officer or 'any other man.' Was elected by the unanimous vote of the company and am satisfied. We have a four gun battery and a bully company. The company is from Council Bluffs, Iowa and is commanded by Capt. N.T. Spoon, and has not a dutchman in it. You'd better believe I'm 'down on the Dutch.' Fremont's removal, I believe, gives general satisfaction to the American portion of the army here. Some contractors and the Germans are feeling bad about it. I should like to visit you this fall, but it is doubtful if I can get away. My pay as 'Military Instructor' is in obeyance, and it is probably I shall never get it. My principal hope was in Capt. McKerver, Fremont's Adjutant General, and it is stated in this afternoon's paper that he is in arrest in Washington, to which place he was called after Fremont's removal..." Very good condition.
