War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Sergeant George F. Lawrence, who enlisted July 19, 1861 with the 21st Massachusetts Infantry, was wounded at Chantilly and rose to the rank of 1st lieutenant. This letter is 4pp. octavo, on fine patriotic lettersheet, dateline Millersville, December 13, 1861, and reads in part: “...I want to go south where I can have a chance to burn some powder and have something for excitement...there is no chance to tell if a fellow is a going to run or not when he hears the balls whistle around his head and if I am a going to run I want to know it before I have been here 3 years...I did not come out here to guard some damn railroad and lay around...” More. Fine condition.
