Pair of war-date Union soldier's Autograph Letters Signed by Joseph N. Tomlinson, Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery, who died of disease March 14, 1862 at Nashville. These letters are dated January 3, 1862 and February 1862, and read in part: "...Tell the children Uncle Joe has gone to war but has not forgotten them, would like to see them and hope I shall some day. I am quite confident of returning to my family in health...Rose I hope I shall live to see you once more...Our battery is quite healthy. There is now on the south bank of Green River about twelve thousand men. I look for a forward movement of our troops here soon. We hard last night by dispatch that Columbus was taken by our forces, if true why I feel as though we had done wonders. I think the war will not last long. We may have a bloody fight at Bowling Green still, still I cant tell how that will be. Fort Henry was a good victory for us and we felt fine over it but if Columbus is taken that is still better for our side. There is now a very large force here and we are looking for some reinforcements of about fifty thousand looking as though we might see some fight yet..." Both near fine....plus; Autograph Letter Signed by William Tomlinson, 1st Ohio Light Artillery, 1pp. quarto, Nashville, Tennessee, March 15, 1862, and reads in part: "...I have got to pen you the fearful news of Brother Joseph's death. He died yesterday at 12 am of Typhoid pneumonia. He had his reason till the last. Poor man has gone to his long home. I am left alone here in the land of strangers. I could not send his body home for there is no chance of doing it now...Oh how I feel I would do anything to have him sent home but could not, no chance. I expect we move on Decatur, Alabama next week. I will write again soon..." Fine condition.
