War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed by Elmer Y. Burgan, Captain 4th Iowa Infantry, WIA at Pea Ridge, 4pp. octavo, Quincy, Iowa, October 26, 1862, addressed to Adjutant Baker of that state, and reads in part: "...I have a matter of vital importance to me to lay before you and the Governor of this state and earnestly request that if in your power you will give me your aid in the matter. I entered the service in July 1861 as Capt of Company H 4th Iowa Vol Infantry and remained with my regiment until after the battle of Pea Ridge at which place I received a wounded and was injured so as to bring on hernia, entirely disabling me for duty...I was not able to walk one mile and knew that it would be some months before I would be fit for service. I felt it was a duty to the company and to the Government that I should offer my resignation, which I forwarded to the Regiment but it was captured by the Rebels and caused some delay...Not hearing of my resignation I sent my furlough with a surgeon certificate to St. Louis for an extension of time which was sent to the War Department at Washington....I was mustered out of the service on 9th day of July...I do not apply expecting to be restored to my command but I think justice demands that the order mustering me out should be revoked and my resignation received by the Department...I can obtain the certificate of the surgeon of the regiment that I did my duty as long as I was able, and as to my Department as an officer I would refer you to General G.M. Dodge..." Very good condition.
