War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed by Major Thomas Shepard, 6th Iowa Cavalry, 4pp. quarto, Head Quarters 6th Cavy, Camp Hendershott, Davenport, Iowa, December 16, 1862, addressed to Governor Kirkwood, and reads in part: "...General Baker informs me that among other matters on which he has written you, he has mentioned the matters connected with our regiment, but at the request of Col. Wilson and Wm. Williams who arrived here yesterday. I have undertaken to lay before you more fully the matter of our consolidation and some other matter of interest to us. Mr. Williams has brought to the general a letter from Mr. Markell turning the sharp shooters over to him (W) and this will leave the whole matter in the hands of W. Mr. Williams says they have at least 300 men it will take 15o for the battery and this will leave 150 men for our regiment. Mr. Williams also says he spoke to you about the battery but fearing it would escape your memory request me to remind you that it is a battery of Flying Artillery he wishes to organize, of 6 guns..." more on paying the troops and acquiring arms.
