War-date Manuscript Letter Signed by various citizens of Des Moines, Iowa, 1pp. quarto, September 4, 1862, addressed to Governor Kirkwood, and reads "Being satisfied that our fellow citizen J.M. Griffith is eminently qualified for the position of a Field officer in one of the Regiments in course of organization and believing that the interest of the service would be promoted by his appointment as Lt. Colonel. We take pleasure in endorsing him to you as a gentleman of energy and business qualifications to discharge the responsible duties of the position named..." Very good condition.
