War-date Union soldier's wife's Autograph Letter Signed by Mary Ann Watters, 4pp. octavo, Des Moines, Iowa, November 5, 1862, addressed to Adjt. General Baker, and reads in part: "...I take the liberty to apply to you for the release of my husband James Watters, from confinement at Camp Heron Davenport, Iowa, my husband has been deprived of his liberty in the following manner and under unfortunate circumstances for himself & family. Capt Kennedy of Co. G 39th Regt Iowa Vol Inf pretends that my husband enlisted in his Co. which is not the case but said Kennedy got my said husband under the influence of liquor and then conspired with others to persuade my husband to be sworn into the service of the United States of which my husband under oath denies that he has no recollection of a the time...a squad of soldiers dent after my husband and arrested him & brought him to the said camp, where he was confined in the guard house...he has been transported to Davenport without the decision of a court martial. Your Hon. is well aware that according to Army regulation of the U.S. no man can be forced to be a soldier when enlisted in a state of perfect intoxication as I am sorry to say my husband was..."
