War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Charles William Personius, 50th New York Engineers, Camp Leslie, October 7, 1862, and reads in part: "...Our camp is near the Navy yard on the north side of the Potomac River and about 1-1/2 miles from the capitol...We started from Elmira at 3 oclock pm last Friday...we crossed into Pennsylvania and a more horrible place than the northern part of Penn cannot be found. It is all rocks and trees, the railroad in some places is cut through the solid rock some 20 feet deep, in others it is along the side of a great hill on the one side..." Fine condition...plus; War-date ALS by Charles Personius, 4pp. octavo, Camp Leslie, October 9, 1862, and reads in part: "...Williamsport...I should judge was quite a large one though nothing very stylish about it but it is situated in as fine a country as I have seen. It is very level with a gravely soil but as you leave Williamsport and move down toward Harrisburg the soil is red clay mixed with lime...When we came toward the southern part we found the road guarded by Gov. Curtains soldiers and it is all the way from there to Washington City. We got to Baltimore about half past twelve...We stayed in Baltimore 26 hours we slept in the car house right in the dirt but they gave us middling good board namely dry bread, good coffee, raw meat...got in Washington at 10 oclock Sunday night, went directly to what is called the soldiers home but oh heavens of all the bad smelling places...We passed the great capitol of the United States, the exterior is not so nice as I supposed it to be they are rigging it over and it is not near finished..."
