War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Charles William Personius, 50th New York Engineers, Camp Leslie, October 25, 1862, and reads in part: "...Polk tents with us now he exchanged with Joshua Kendall so we have only six in the tent. Josh is in the hospital sick...You used to tell me that you thought soldiering would be bad for my cough but it is right the contrary for I think my cough is getting better instead of worse..." Fine condition. ....plus; ALS by Charles Personius, 4pp. quarto, December 22, 1862, and reads in part: "...Next Thursday is Christmas, I believe, and if nothing happens the boys intend to celebrate the day in full style...Last night the boys had lots of fun with the Lieuts nigger Jim after he had gone to bed. The boys told him that the Devil would be after him that night (he sleeps up in the gallery) Well the boys have got a false face and one of them put it on and then got an old coat and turned it wrong side out then tied some old rags around him. The got some ropes and then the boys drummed on some old tin pans and stamped their feet and the spook started up stairs on a trot after the poor nigger and Jim raised up and saw the frightful looking thing and then commenced to holler, to the orderly and said orderly (then louder) Orderly Jesus Christ Orderly Lord a Massy Orderly I tell you he plead like a good fellow, then he began to cough and the boys let him go and went up with a candle and so he was white and most sent to death..." Fine condition....plus ; two home front letters. Fine condition (4 items)
