War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Cornelius Van Houten, 1st New Jersey Light Artillery, 8pp. octavo, Camp Hamilton, near Fortress Monroe, Virginia, April 1, 1862, and reads in part: "...we are close to the town that the Rebels burned last fall. It is a town called Hampton, it has been a very handsome place. It has all been layed out in beautiful gardens, but now it is all in ruins. There is not a whole house standing. We lay exactly east of Hampton and fortress Monroe. I might say we are in the ruined town of Hampton...I have seen that great gunboat that they call the Monitor, it looks just like a cheese box set on a board, with port holes in it. I do not know what our troops are doing in the west for I have not seen the papers...." More. Fine condition.
