War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Cornelius Van Houten, 1st New Jersey Light Artillery, 1pp. octavo, and reads in part: "...I understand there is a Regmt of heavy arty to be raised in Jersey. I suppose there will have to be some officers also raised, you can hint to Mr. Hill that I am ready for anything. I have sent in a request to headquarters to be allowed an examination preparatory to entering the Free Military School at Philadelphia. The school is for the purpose of making officers for negro regiments..." Fine condition...plus; War-date ALS by Captain George Thomas Woodbury, 1st New Jersey Light Artillery, 1pp. octavo, Newark, New Jersey, August 27, 1863, addressed to Van Houten and offering any assistance in securing him a promotion. Fine condition....plus; Retained copy of a letter by Woodbury to the Governor of New Jersey on behalf of Van Houten, stating that "he has served with distinction through the Peninsula Campaign and that of the Rappahannock. A faithful soldier and a worthy man..." Fine condition. (3 items)
