War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Cornelius Van Houten, 1st New Jersey Light Artillery, 4pp. octavo, Fort Sampson, Virginia, December 8, 1864, and reads in part: "...we have left Fort Davis and moved about seven miles farther to the left. We found almost everything up side down so we have been kept pretty busy in righting them. Capt. Clark will have everything just so or it wont do. He is very particular about having every tent built just so and in just such a position and some times it gives us boys a great deal of labor, but after he gets things arranged I tell you we look nice, and our camp generally looks like a neatly laid out small town...our new recruits do not see where there is so much hardship in a soldiers life for we old boys have learned by sad experience the trade and of course we tell them how to get along the best way. I cannot say I am sorry I learned the trade but I do wish we could get through with this big job we have on hand..." Fine condition.
