War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Henry A. Wiley, 104th New York Infantry, 4pp. quarto, Camp Reliance, Clouds Mills, Va, May 3, 1862, and reads in part: "...Tonight at dress parade I received my commission as Capt. of Co. B...The Sergt. Major was appointed 2 Lieut in our company. Col. Rohrbach nominated Geo. Snyder as 2 Lieut but owing to Gov. Morgan being well acquainted with, and a personal friend of Lt. [William J.] Starks...and by other influences brought to bear in favor of Starks, Gov. Morgan saw fit to disregard the nomination of the Col and appt Starks to the place. I know that this was contrary to the Cols wishes. Starks is a smart man and the Col. meant to do well by him, but did not want a Troy man appt in the Geneseo part of the regiment. But Starks friends would not be put off, and they besieged the Governor, until he appt him....Today several of the officers went over and visited of the home of Senator Mason of Rebel notoriety. It is now used as brigade hospital...The next place is owned and occupied by a family by the name of Scott. You must remember of hearing about an officer of one of the Michigan regiments being captured last summer by being invited to accompany a couple of young ladies home, and on his arrival at the house, he was taken prisoner by the rebels and sent to Richmond. This is the family that had it done. The young ladies were arrested and placed in confinement a long time by the Union troops at Washington... We have just learned that Yorktown had been evacuated by the rebels..." More. Fine condition.
