War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Marshal P. Woods, 9th New Hampshire Infantry, 4pp. octavo, Arlington Heights, September 4, 1862, and reads in part: "...I suppose you have heard of the battle out at Bull Run last week, it was not but a few miles west of us, and we heard a good many reports about it, but could not tell how it was. But there has been a good many soldiers here right from the battlefield and told us all about it. The Six N.H. was in the fight and got all cut to pieces. There was a lot of them taken prisoner and killed. There was some 1200 prisoners went by here last night of our men that the Rebels took. We saw Nathan Smith last night he was taken prisoner and he told us about the boys as well as he could. He said that Joshua & Demary was not in the battle...He said that Cyrus Clapp [6th NH Infy] was shot dead in the first of the battle, and Mr.[John W. Hastings was wounded in the left breast and he though that it would be a doubtful case. He was taken prisoner and is in their hands now [He is listed as being KIA 8/29/62]...." Fine condition.
