War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Marshal P. Woods, 9th New Hampshire Infantry, 7pp. octavo, Pleasant Valley, Maryland, October 19, 1862, with cover franked by Lt. John Edward Mason who as AAAG of the 9th NH Infy, this letter reads in part: “...I will tell you some of the things that we hav e to eat that I like very much. Boiled pork and vinegar and hard tack. I like raw pork and vinegar pretty well, perhaps you would not like it (salt pork I mean) Boiled salt beef and vinegar is pretty good. We love fresh beef, we have every day or two...the orders have just come to dig ditches rouned our tents and ...There is a lot of the boys getting orders of the Capt to buy of the sutlers. I do not think much of eating money up before I get it...” Fine condition.
