SLOCUM, Henry Warner (1827-1894) was a Union general during the American Civil War and later served in the United States House of Representatives from New York. During the war, he was one of the youngest major generals in the Army and fought numerous major battles in the Eastern Theater and in Georgia and the Carolinas. Controversy arose from his conduct at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was accused of indecision and a dilatory advance to the battlefield, earning him the derogatory nickname "Slow Come". War-date Union general's Autograph Letter Signed by Henry W. Slocum, 1pp. octavo, on Headquarters Twelfth Corp D'Armee, lettersheet, March 18, 1863, addressed to General Daniel Butterfield, and reads "...My second division is at Aquia Landing. Will the General go there today or will he review the 1st Division today and defer the review of the second. It is seven miles from here to the Landing..." Irregular left margin, else very good condition.
