WOOL, John (1784-1869) Union major general who commanded the Department of Virginia until his retirement in 1863.Autograph Letter Signed, "John E. Wool" 3pp. octavo, Troy, December 11, 1863, addressed to George Laughlin of Cincinnati, and reads in part: "...It was my intention to have connected with my letter a condensed history of the state and condition of the country previous to the commencement of the Rebellion, the most gigantic and bloody the world has ever known; the causes which led to it, including a notice of the weak and imbecilic if not pusillanimous conduct of President Buchanan, and those who have prolonged the war to the present time...It is however nearly completed and when published will show what disappointed ambition can accomplish and what great evils it has brought on our prosperous country, the most to any other on the globe. It has caused blood to flow in torrents, pestilence, famine and desolation to lay waste the Southern States, and tens of thousands of widows and orphans to weep over the loss of their brave protectors who perished in the field of battle defending the Union. Such is Civil War..." Fine.
