War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Solon G. Blaisdell, 12th New Hampshire Volunteers, WIA at Cold Harbor, 4pp. quarto, Point Lookout, Maryland, October 18, 1863, and reads in part: "...We have had...over a thousand more prisoners come in since I last wrote you. We have a fence twelve feet high....where we keep the traitors. Last night some of the gray backs collected boards together some way and made a ladder and tried to escape over the fence but got defeated in their plans. I think we shall have to shoot two or three before they will mind their business. Some of the scamps are pretty smart fellows...Some are pretty tough especially those from Texas....There is a rumor here that Gen. Meade is fighting the Rebs at or near the Old Bull Run battlefield...I hope he will give them a sound whipping...but Old Lee is nobody's fool, but he was not quite enough for Meade at Gettysburg...What about another draft? I think Old Abe will draw the rope a little tighter next time...I hope the western army will be successful in their next battle. We hear that the South are arming the slaves and I should think that is so the way the darkies come over here from Va....If the States will return to the Union and submit to its laws and let slavery die gradually I think it would be better than to prolong the war..." More. Fine.
