War-date, Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Maj. William H. Jameson, 2pp. quarto, St. Louis, [Mo.], Aug. 7, 1863. His statement is as follows, in part: "I…respectfully report to you the loss of private effects on board the Steamer 'Ruth' at the time she burned…my clerk Samuel G. Lamson was drowned at the time of the disaster…he had a large trunk full of clothing, the value of which could not have been less than one hundred dollars…which was destroyed…he must have had at least one hundred dollars in money in his pocket book…there was no pocket book found about his person when his body was recovered…". One the second page Jameson provides a written schedule of the personal property he lost in the wreck including "one broadcloth military cloak cape" which he valued at $20.00. VG.
