War-date Union Autograph Letter Signed by Edward Stinson, President of the Dubuque & Sioux city, Rail Road Company, 1pp. quarto, June 18, 1862, addressed to Governor Kirkwood of Iowa, it reads "Learning that Gen. J.M. Harrison will apply for the position of Major in the 18th or some other Iowa Regiment I can truly say from what I know of him, as well as from what I have heard from many citizens here in whose judgment I place great reliance, that I believe his appointment would be a judicious one and that he is in all respects well fitted for the position..." Very good condition.Jesse M. Harrison a forty-nine year old, was commissioned as captain in the 21st Iowa Infantry and led his men during the siege of Vicksburg, where he was wounded on May 22, 1863, and later discharged for his wounds.
