War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Lemuel Ratcliff, 24th Iowa Infantry, who died of disease in January 1864, 2pp. quarto, on Confederate paper, Natchez, Mississippi, August 4, 1863, with cover, it reads in part: "...we got marching orders and the next got on board of the boats and left Vicksburg for Natchez, one hundred miles below. We had a very pleasant trip....Natchez is divided into two towns, one is called Natchez under the hill and the other Natchez on the hill. The first one on the hill is the prettiest place I have seen in the South...this is counted one of the healthiest places on the Mississippi it is one thousand miles below Cairo and three hundred above New Orleans..." Fine condition.
