LAWLER, Michael Kelly (November 16, 1814 - July 26, 1882) was an officer in the United States Army in both the Mexican War and the Civil War. In the latter conflict, as a brigadier general he commanded a brigade of infantry in the Western Theater and served in several battles. PAYNE, Eugene Beauharnais (1835-1910) Brevet Brigadier General, served as Lt. Colonel of the 27th Illinois Infantry. Pair of war-date Letters Signed by Colonel E.B. Payne, 3pp. quarto, Head Quarters 37th Regt. Ill. Infantry Vols, 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 19th Army Corps, Morganzia, Louisiana, August 22, 1864, addressed to Major C.T. Christiansen, and reads in part: "...I have the honor to ask that an order be issued directing the consolidation of the 27th Regiment of Illinois Infantry Volunteers and the forwarding of the non-veterans to Chicago, Illinois (the place of organization) at the date of the expiration of the original term of service...On the 10th day of February 1864 a portion of the regiment re-enlisted at Brownsville, Texas. The regiment then numbered five hundred and sixty one (561) enlisted men. Out of this number only two hundred and forty eight (248) have ever re-enlisted being less than one half...The 37th Regiment Illinois Infantry Volunteers is therefore a non-veteran regiment and in accordance with existing orders must be consolidated..." Fine condition...plus; Letter Signed by E.B. Payne, 2pp. quarto, August 24, 1864, reading in part "I have the honor to request that I may be honorably discharged the service of the United States, said discharge to take effect Sept. 17, 1864. I ask this for the following reasons: Expiration of original three years service. I was mustered into the Service of the United States as Captain Co. 'C' 37th Ill. Vols, Sept. 18 1861 for three years, consequently my term expires Sept. 17, 1864..." Endorsed on verso by Colonel Lionel Sheldon (1828-1917) and General Lawler, who forwards it to General John Reynolds. Fine condition.
