Autograph Letter Signed, Henry W. Mason, Corporal, Co. "B", 24th Wisconsin Infantry, who was wounded-in-action at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee on November 30, 1864, had his leg amputated and would die of his wounds on December 23, 1864. The letter is 2p. quarto, pencil, "Before Atlanta", August 9, 1864, with cover addressed to his brother in Wisconsin. It reads in part: "...we are not in Atlanta yet and there is no telling when we will be. Our army is about three quarters of the way around it in lines of fortifications but there is not enough of us to surround the place. If we had about 40,000 more men here I think we would capture the whole rebel army. We have all the railroads cut...there was some hard fighting during last week Gen. Howard as you have undoubtedly heard has been relieved of the command of our corps and has taken command of the Army of the Tennessee. He is a good man we were sorry to lose him but I suppose he is more useful where he now is..." VG.
