War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by George C. Starr, Captain Co. D, 1st Mississippi [Colored] Cavalry, WIA at Benton, Missisippi on 5/7/64, 1pp. quarto, Skipwith Landing, Mississippi, January 15, 1864, addressed to Colonel Embury Dufree Osband (1832-1866) later brevet brigadier general, and reads in part: “...I would most respectfully call your attention to the following case, a private of my company named Charles Henry was absent from the company from the 24th December 1863 till the 2nd January 1864. On the 30th December I reported him as a deserter. He returned voluntarily and was sent by me to the guard house where he now is. Previous to his absence he was a good soldier...I would most repsectfully request that he be returned to his company...” Fine condition.
