War-date Union soldier's wife's Autograph Letter Signed by Mary Bruce, 4pp. octavo, March 1864, addressed to General Baker, and reads in part: "...The people here have advised me to state my circumstances to you and it maybe that you can have something done to help me. I am Mrs. Mary E. Bruce wife of J.R. Bruce of Co. F Fourth Iowa Infantry, he sent me two dollars last July and I have not had once cent since. Have had nothing to eat or wear only as my neighbors brought it to me...I lost two children a few weeks ago the oldest and youngest, could you send me some money and have it taken out of my husbands pay for he don't send me anything..." With endorsements by two others attesting to the truthfulness of the statements. Very good condition.
