War-date Union soldier's Autograph Letter Signed by Frank Brown, of the 87th Indiana, 4pp. octavo, December 14, 1864, Near Savannah, Georgia, and reads in part: "...Communication has just been opened with the fleet and the mail will be sent out. I joyfully embrace the opportunity of reopening correspondence with the rest of the world and as in duty bound write first to Mother next to Sister. I hope to get some letters soon I am anxious to hear what has been going on in the 'United States' while we have been here on this grand pleasure excursion through the rebellious state of Georgia. Oh! That I had the time, stationary, and ability to portray the scenes of our march through this state but that is out of the question. It would make a large book...we have lived off of the county as we came along and lived pretty well generally. The staples were sweet potatoes, pork, corn meal, honey, molasses &c. which we found in abundance until we got down where we now are. This part of the country is Cypress Swamps and Rice plantations. We cant get much here but rice as we have got communication opened I suppose we will soon get rations plenty...I would like to have you send me some newspapers for November also late ones as I have not heard from the outside world for a month and would like to be posted..."
